Y’ALL. I can hardly believe it’s been another year since winning HGTV Design Star. It feels like it was only yesterday, but also a million years ago at the same time. Winning Season 8 marked a pivotal moment in my career, and for the 11th anniversary of the finale, I want to take a moment to reflect on this journey and celebrate the impact it had.
The Very Beginning
I was working part time as an interior designer when my brother sent me an ad for a casting call that pretty much said if you think you got what it takes, apply today. So I did. And after countless interviews, I was selected as one of the 10 designers from over 10,000+ applicants to compete on Season 8.
The Competition
Over 6 grueling weeks, I competed against some incredible designers in an array of design challenges - beginning with a personalized vignette and ending with a hotel suite. At the time, I felt like all I could focus on was not passing out from the sheer excitement and determination.
However, looking back, I can confidently say I had the time of my life. I look back fondly on the late nights, the intense critiques, and the camaraderie among the designers. We were all there with a shared passion, and that connection made the experience even more meaningful.
The Winning Moment
The moment my name was announced as the winner was surreal. I felt a mix of shock, joy, and immense gratitude. “I won, yo!” became almost like my own catch phrase, as following the airing of the finale, I’d have strangers come up to me in public repeating those very words.
Winning Design Star validated all the hard work I put into my designs, and I like to think of the victory as not just mine, but also as a testament to the support from my family and friends. I truly couldn’t have done it without them!
The Impact
The impact of winning Design Star goes beyond personal achievement. It opened doors for me to connect with so many amazing people and clients, and to create spaces I only ever dreamed of.
Being on a television show also brought opportunities for me to inspire others. I’ve met aspiring designers who look to my journey as a source of motivation. Knowing that I can encourage someone to pursue their passion and believe in their potential is incredibly rewarding.
Looking Forward
Today I celebrate this anniversary with a full heart. I look back on all that I’ve accomplished so far and that makes me even more excited for what’s to come.
Thank you to everyone who supported me, believed in me, and cheered me on. Your encouragement means the world.
Here’s to many more years of creativity, inspiration, and living the design dream.
With love,
Tiffany Brooks
